2015 – A Codelocks year in review

As 2015 draws to a close, managing director, Grant Macdonald, reflects on some of the significant moments in the company’s year and takes a look at what to expect in 2016.

New products, new markets

This year we introduced two completely new products to the company’s electronic lock portfolio: the NANO90 furniture lock and our first SMART locker lock.

For greater control and convenience, we’ve seen digital locks continue to replace traditional locks and keys in many different applications. The office environment is no exception, with many items of office furniture – lockers, cabinets and desks etc. – now supplied with digital locks rather than keys.

Recognising this trend, in April we launched our first electronic lock specifically designed for smaller lockers, desk drawers, mail boxes, filing and medical cabinets. The KitLock NANO90 is compact (just 30mm by 90mm), it can be flush as well as surface mounted and comes in a range of modern colours.

The new product was well received at interzum in May – the biannual trade fair for the furniture industry in Germany – winning a ‘High Product Quality’ award, and at the AWFS Fair in Las Vegas in July. During the year we’ve worked with major furniture manufacturers who are integrating the product into their own furniture lines – so expect news from us in that area next year!

As the Internet of Things (IoT) continues to spread its influence this year, we’ve seen more and more automated digital locks appear in our market. We expect the proliferation of mobile apps, designed to give greater control and convenience, to continue to dominate new products in 2016.

Our latest offering, the KL1550 SMART locker lock, can be programmed, managed and opened in multiple ways: by tablet, code and card. It also supports NetCode, our web-based application, allowing users to generate one-time access codes from a remote location and send the codes via SMS or email direct to the person requiring access. This integration of technology opens up new market areas for us and allows standalone digital locks to compete with more sophisticated wireless access control systems.

Whilst our locker and cabinet locks have been a focus for us this year, next year we plan to include more functionality and automate our digital door locks – details will follow in the New Year.

Bigger, better HQ

Having outgrown our current office and warehouse space in Newbury, Berkshire, we announced our intention to move to a bigger, better facility on nearby Greenham Business Park back in July. A new purpose-built HQ gives us the opportunity to offer customers better facilities for support and training. After 10 years at our current location, the move will inject new energy into the company and, as we continue to grow, it will give us the space to take on new recruits and the capacity to keep more products in stock. We hope to be in place by the end of the second quarter next year.

Product-specific training courses

Once we are established in our new home, we’ll be reinstating our popular locksmith and facility and estates manager training courses. Designed to help with installation and programming, our free-of-charge digital lock training courses have been well received in the past, and next year, to help customers keep up to date with technology, the focus will be on our new electronic products. If you’d like to attend, you can register your interest with our marketing department by emailing marketing@codelocks.co.uk and we’ll send you details once they’ve been finalised.

New faces

This year we welcomed Colin Campbell, Michelle Watkins and Dotty Kaufenberg to our sales teams. Colin and Michelle are responsible for expanding our digital door lock business here in the UK, and Dotty is driving sales in Southern California.

Colin is also helping us develop sales channels in the Middle East, where the potential for market growth is particularly significant for us next year. Expect to hear more from this region next year.

We’ve also added new members to the marketing and warehouse teams in the UK and US this year, a warm welcome to you all.

Merry Christmas from Codelocks

To all our customers, distributors and suppliers – Merry Christmas and a Happy New year from everyone at Codelocks. We look forward to working together in 2016.

Our last day for shipping is Monday 21st December. The UK office will be closed from midday on 22nd December, reopening on Monday 4th January.
